How to Choose the Right Cat Window Bed for Your Feline Friend
Published by Connor Bainton,
If you have a cat, then you know that there ain't a greater gift than the tremendous amount of love, affection and time your cat gives you. In almost anything they do – from the way they purr and meow, slowly blinking at us, to their fussy attitudes at times – we find these creatures truly irresistible.
To show all the love for their cat companions, cat owners often pamper their cats. But to really make your kitty happy and treat her with something extra special, you should consider her nature first. Hence, getting a cat window bed might be an excellent idea.
Why Do Cats Like to Relax and Sleep in Window Beds?

Cats are total window fans. We often see them in high places, either. So, why do cats like being by windows, you might ask? Instinct plays a huge role in determining this feline habit. Early cats were hunters that lived in the wild, and their climbing ability helped them survive. Because being up high was natural to cat ancestries, it has been passed down to the cats we keep as pets today. Being by window allow cats to feel secured and have good vantage points – meaning they can observe both of their outsides and inside worlds. That's why cats can happily sit for hours at the window trilling at birds. Besides, they love laying out in the sunshine as well – and all that within the warmth and comfort of their own home. For these reasons, window beds are like front row seats to your cat's favourite movies. And, what more could she possibly want?
Important Features to Consider When Buying a Window Bed
A window cat bed is basically a ledge placed and secured in front of a window, or sliding door. It might become your cat's new favourite spot in the house, so you need to choose one carefully. There are several important things you need to consider when selecting a window perch.
Quality of Materials
You'll want to choose cat window beds that are well-constructed and made from high-quality materials. You'll never want the window bed your cat is using to fall down. First, check the frame – it should be made from a durable material such as PVC or steel. For the sleeping surface, look for strong fabric or material that doesn't stretch out easily over time. Most beds are covered with padding and upholstered with faux shearling, but more convenient options come with different sorts of microfiber that provide more comfort and durability. Microfiber is an extremely breathable material, soft enough and comfortable so that your cat can enjoy curling and sleeping in there for hours.

Size and Weight
Besides being comfortable and sturdy, the cat window seat has to be the appropriate size as well. Check the weight of your cat prior to purchasing, to know if your preferred bed will be able to hold her. There are many options that can hold up to 20 kg, which is quite enough. And if you have multiple cats, check each of their weight individually. Cats like to sleep together, and in that case, you need to provide them with a safe option. Beds come in different dimensions as well, so pick one that won't be too small for your cat afterwards.
Style and Décor
As with almost every other cat accessory, cat window beds come in different colours and style. Some beds might have bright colours, while others have neutral tones like tan or grey, letting you go for one that will blend nicely with your existing home décor.
Washable

Luckily, cats are self-cleaners so they don't make much dirt and seldom require baths. But, the fact is that cats shed. At any place cat sleeps you'll find a lot of hair, so it's important that your window bed has a good option for washing. Most cat beds have detachable covers that are machine washable, and you should be washing it on regular basis.
Are Window Beds Safe for Cats?

Being used by thousands of cats around the world without serious issues, window cat beds are carefully designed to not put your cat or the house in danger. The only thing you have to ensure is to install it properly. Usually, they come in two installation types, suction cups and window sill. Those beds that get installed with suction cups can basically be installed on any window. Suction cups are very reliable and very easy to install. The window surface must be nonporous and very clean, and it's a piece of good advice to clean the surface and suction cups with rubbing alcohol so they can have firm suction. After installation, it's good practice to place an object of approximate weight as your cat. It's also recommended to wait for two hours before letting your cat use it. Every few weeks, check if it's still securely attached to the window to make sure your kitty stays happy and safe!
